Backyard Swimming Pools have been bringing together friends, neighbors and families for thousands of years. Most of you have wonderful childhood memories of cannon ball contests, water volleyball and diving for pennies but since that time swimming pools have come a long way.

The days of “Kidney Bean Shaped” swimming pools with three feet of concrete apron, inefficient loud pumps and chlorine pucks have been replaced with custom waterscapes incorporating natural stone patios & landscaping, Variable Frequency Drive Pumps, web based automation, in-floor cleaning systems and architectural details that boggle the mind. In fact, todays pools can be completely run from from your computer or iPhone.

Let’s start with the design process...You are not looking for a “Pool” design, you are looking for an “Outdoor Living” design. A proper design details every item that you want to incorporate into your yard. These items should include the swimming pool, patio, walkways, steps, landscaping, lighting, outdoor kitchen & fireplace, drainage, equipment location utility routing, fencing, etc. The plan should be drawn to scale including elevations and all the architectural details should be specified. Remember, you get what you pay for, you should plan on paying for a quality outdoor living design. “Free Designs” are a waste of time unless you are looking for a very basic pool. These designs are rarely creative, lack a cohesive vision between all aspects of the outdoor living environment and many times are the same design your neighbor was just presented with.

Now it’s time to accessorize...Your options are almost limitless when it comes to swimming pool features so lets talk about some of todays trends. Swimming pools are getting a little smaller but are incorporating more technology and architectural features. Some of the most popular items now are:

While this is not a comprehensive list of all features, we find that these elements are integrated into almost every pool we design & build.

How do I know if I’m on the right track?...Looking back, our happiest clients all have a few things in common. The first is that the clients decided not to skimp on the pool and go with the upgraded energy efficient equipment, a maintenance free pool interior (Like PebbleTec), integrated full chemical automation and any other features that save on maintenance time and cost. And Secondly, they had a well balanced project. We suggest that the pool account for 1/3 of the budget, the hardscaping including patio, walls, outdoor kitchen & fireplace, etc. 1/3 of the budget and landscaping, fencing, electrical, gas and all other items should be the final 1/3 of the budget. The goal of any outdoor living environment including swimming pools is that one element should not stand out more than any other element.

How to pick the right contractor...Choosing a Raleigh pool builder is much like choosing a husband or wife. Remember that once you make your decision you will be "married" to your builder not only during the installation period but for as long as you own your pool. We're all grown-ups here and all know to check references, tour completed projects, verify insurance, blah...blah...blah... you know the deal but what I suggest is a little more. Every reputable builder should be able to meet these basic requirements, so all things being equal think about what could make the pool building process as enjoyable as possible. Look for a company that you are socially compatible with and pick the company that you "feel" good about. After all isn't your "gut" feeling usually the right choice? Don't go into the process with an adversarial attitude toward your contractor, trying to beat every penny out of them. Instead create a team environment with the common goal of creating the backyard swimming pool of your dreams.

Getting it Done...There’s no clean way to excavate 100 tons of soil, bring in 50 tons of concrete, dig plumbing & electrical trenches,install retaining walls, pour 30 yards of concrete sub-deck and then install 20 tons of flagstone decking. Your yard will be a construction site and you will be tired of having workers at your house from morning to night but it will all be worth it. Once the pool is filled and the final flower is planted, it’s time to grab a bottle of wine, tell the kids to jump-on-in, have your husband cook a great dinner in the new outdoor kitchen and let new memories of your family replace the old memories of your childhood.

We will be following this project over the next few weeks as the work progresses. This Raleigh swimming pool was installed just two years ago and is already in need of a full renovation due to poor design, engineering, construction techniques and workmanship. Energy Conservation Pool Tips

Heating & Heat Loss

• Reduce heat loss by using a pool cover. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, savings of 50% - 70% are possible.

• Fencing, hedges, landscaping, and cabanas that shelter your pool from prevailing winds will further reduce heat loss.

• If your pool heater is more than five years old, chances are a new high efficiency gas heater could quickly pay for itself in utility bill savings.

• A pool heat pump can save up to 80% in energy usage compared to a gas heater. Check with your pool professional to see if a heat pump is appropriate for your region.

• If you use your pool only on weekends, reduce your heater or heat pump thermostats settings by eight to ten degrees during the week.

• When leaving for vacation for more than a week, turn off the pool heater or heat pump, including the pilot light. Please use caution in freezing conditions.

• According to the National Swimming Pool Institute and the American Red Cross, the most healthful swimming temperature is 78 degrees. Reducing your heater or heat pump thermostat to maintain a 78 degree or lower temperature will also help conserve energy.

• Install a timer or a control system to automate the hours of operation.

• When reopening your pool, make sure your heater or heat pump is working properly.

Circulation

• Replace your pool pump with a more energy-efficient model.

• New variable speed pumps with permanent magnet motors and digital controls can save as much as 90% in utility costs compared to one- or two-speed pumps with induction motors.

• If using an energy-efficient one- or two-speed pump, make sure your pump is sized to your pool’s requirements.

• Reduce run time or speed to reduce energy use.

• If using a one-speed pump, reduce filtration run time. In general, water needs to be circulated through the filter once every 24 hours.

• If using a two-speed or variable speed pump, use the lowest speed to appropriately circulate the water. Reducing speed saves more energy than reducing run time.

• Run your pool's filtration system during off-peak hours when electricity demand is lower, generally between 8 p.m. and 10 a.m. Install a timer or a control system to automate the hours of operation.

• Keep intake grates clear of debris. Clogged drains require the pump to work harder.

• To obtain maximum filtration and energy efficiency, backwash or clean your filter regularly, as required.

Raleigh Pebble Tec Swimming Pool Renovation

Have you ever wondered what to do when your old plaster is rough, stained and pitted? The answer is that it is time to resurface your concrete swimming pool. I have attached a short video showing the process of applying a Pebble Tec Swimming Pool Finish to a 30+ year old pool.

The first thing we did on this project was to remove all the existing plaster, tile and coping. It took a few workers a couple of days and a lot of hard work to get it all removed and prepared for the new surface. Applying a new pool finish is much like painting a house...About 80% of the work is in the prep phase and the remaining 20% is in the actual application. The color you see here is Moonlight Grey Pebble Tec and the finish comes with a 15 year warranty. The old saying "you get what you pay for" really rings true when it comes to pool resurfacing.

Will My Pool be Ready for Spring?

Most people don't start thinking about swimming pools in Raleigh until the weather starts to get warm. By that time it is generally too late to find a quality swimming pool contractor, approve a dynamic design, apply & secure permits, build the swimming pool & outdoor living area and be ready to have you Memorial Day pool Party. Variable Speed Pumps Save Energy and Money

You may not know that that a standard pool pump uses more electricity than any other appliance in the home, except for an air-conditioner. You also may not know that most pumps are too big and use more energy than you need to keep the swimming pool water sparkling clean.

The culprit: a single-speed pump. A small pump is probably fine if all you want to do is circulate the water, but it might not have enough speed to run your pool cleaner, waterfall or other electrical extras that need a blast of energy.

If that's the case, your pool service probably installed a pump large enough to handle the extras. But with only one speed, it's running full-blast even when your pool cleaner and waterfall aren't operating.

That huge waste of energy is costing you about 80 percent more in electric bills.

Don't let the high cost of running your swimming pool outpace its value as your family's go-to place for fun, relaxation and keeping cool. Making your pool more energy-efficient will save hundreds of dollars a year. Here are a few tips.

• Replace your single-speed pump with a variable-speed unit. High-performance models from such manufacturers as Pentair Water Pool and Spa let you run them on low most of the time. You can crank them up bit by bit when you need to run accessories.

The manufacturers claim the pumps can cut energy use by up to 90 percent compared with single-speed pumps. Frank Bowman, owner of Frank Bowman Designs in Raleigh, North Carolina, says his customers who have switched report saving $300 or more a year on their electric bills.

A variable-speed pump costs more than twice a single-speed model, but you'll recoup the cost in lower electric bills within two years, he estimates. Plus, he says, the pumps are quieter and last longer than older pumps.

As an alternative, two-speed pumps cost less than variable-speed models. And although they're not as efficient as variable-speed pumps, they use far less energy than the single-speed unit.• Run your pool pump less often. Most manufacturers recommend running it between eight and 10 hours a day in the summer and about half that in the winter.

• Put a timer on the pump so it automatically shuts off, and set it to run only when you're paying off-peak rates.

• Switch to LED lighting, which uses up to 75 percent less energy than traditional incandescent underwater lights, and lasts for years.

• Keep your chemicals in balance. If you don't, your filter can run non-stop and the water will never sparkle.

• Clean trap baskets, filters, and pool walls and floor regularly. Clogging can prevent the water from flowing freely. The harder the pump has to work, the more you'll pay to run it.

Did you know that if you already have a conventional chlorine swimming pool, it can be switched over to a state of the art saltwater pool in no time at all? It's true saltwater pools can save the average homeowner hundreds of dollars per year on chemical costs as well as provide your friends and family an enjoyable swimming experience. No more chlorine smelling hair, itchy skin, forgetting to fill the chlorinator, trips to the store to pick up chlorine orforgetting and having the pool turn green...it all can be replaced with a saline based pool water that generates its own chlorine for you. The salt level is kept extremely low...only about 2800 - 3300 parts per million. Some people say they can taste, some people say they can't. But I think it's that you expect to taste chlorine and you don't, so you assume you are tasting salt. Either way talk to someone that has a saltwater pool and they will let you know that it is the only way to go for ease of maintenance and enjoyment.

Best Winter Swimming Pool Safety Cover - What's the Difference?

1. What's the difference between a regular swimming pool cover and a swimming pool safety cover?

A typical solid vinyl pool cover is little more than a tarp to put over your swimming pool. It does not prevent children or pets from gaining access to the pool. All safety covers must conform to the Standard Performance Specification set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). According to the ASTM, a safety cover must be able to support a certain amount of weight, not permit gaps that a child or pet could squeeze through, and remove standing water. A pool cover can not include the word "Safety" unless it meets these standards.

2. Why is a U.L. (underwriters laboratories) approval important?

(By the way, we resurfaced the U.L. test pool in 2008)

Underwriters Laboratories (known as U.L.) is an outside testing company. Many cover company's claim that they meet the ASTM standard F1346-91 for manual safety covers, but have not followed up with outside testing agencies that perform all of the actual tests listed in the ASTM guideline. At Frank Bowman Designs, we only install covers that not only meet but also exceed the guidelines set forth for safety swimming pool covers! For example, we only install covers that use double perimeter webbing and double-thick straps, extremely high-strength 302 grade stainless steel springs, and polyester bonded thread that costs almost 10 times more than the thread used by some of our competitors.

3. Can my children walk and play on the safety cover?

All Frank Bowman Designs covers meet the ASTM guidelines for safety covers and have been U.L. certified. As such they will easily support the weight of a child or an adult in an emergency. However, we do not recommend walking on the cover, and children and pets should never be allowed to play on top of a safety or any other type of pool cover. Adult supervision is always required around any swimming pool area.

4. Should I get a mesh or a solid safety cover?

Both the mesh Safety Swimming Pool Cover and our solid Safety Swimming Pool Cover provide superior protection for your family. Mesh covers do have one safety advantage: they do not permit water to collect. In order to meet safety cover performance standards, solid covers must provide for the elimination of standing water. Our solid safety cover is available in two versions: one with "invisible" mesh panels that allow water to drain through, and an all-solid version that is always sold with an automatic cover pump. The pump must be used at all times in order to maintain the safety of the cover. Ultimately, though, the choice between a mesh or solid cover is up to the preference of the user.

5. Why does the water have to be removed from the cover in order for it to be considered "safe"?

Collected water on a cover is a hazard in itself. There have unfortunately been cases of children and pets who have wandered out on a cover filled with water and slippery debris, become trapped and drowned. That is why the ASTM Performance Specification states that no pool cover can call itself a safety cover if it does not provide for water removal.

6. What type of warranty do your covers come with?

Currently our mesh and solid safety covers come with a 12-year pro-rated manufacturer's warranty. When completed and signed by the original purchaser, this warrants that the cover is free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use.

7. Should I drain my pool before putting on my swimming pool safety cover?

No! It is very important to maintain proper water level to help support the weight of the cover and prevent excess wear. For mesh covers, water level should be 15" to 18" below the top of the pool. For solid covers, water level should be 12" to 16" below the top of the pool. If proper water level is not maintained, the warranty can be void.

8. I have a custom-designed pool that's irregularly shaped. Can I get a LOOP-LOC safety cover that will fit it?
Absolutely! Frank Bowman Designs will first come out and carefully measure your pool. Then, the manufacturer will use their exclusive computerized design system to translate those measurements into a cover that will perfectly conform to the shape and features of your pool.

9. How long will it take to get a custom cover?
From the time F rank Bowman Designs submits your order to the manufacturer it will take approximately 2-3 weeks including fabrication until the cover is completely installed on your pool.

10. I always supervise my children when they are around our pool. Why do I need a safety cover?
A swimming pool is always a magnet for children. At times when you are not around to supervise or your family is away from home, wandering children and pets from the neighborhood may attempt to enter your pool. Even if you have a locked gate (which is a great extra layer of protection), a determined toddler will often be able breach it. Only the security of a safety cover can ensure that no one will be able to gain access to the pool while you are away.

11. How can I keep my pool water clear over the winter months?

All pools, when covered (no matter what type of cover you have), require winter chemical treatment to keep the water clear. When closing your pool in the fall, we recommend use of a winterizing chemical kit, which includes winterizing algaecide.

12. If we have a paver/brick deck can we use a Swimming Pool Safety Cover?

Absolutely! Frank Bowman Designs anchor-in-pipe installation is the perfect application for paver/brick decks. The pipe holds the anchors firmly into place allowing the cover the remain taut all winter long. No wear and tear on the deck, will not pull or ruin pavers/bricks whatsoever.

What is Pebble Tec?
Pebble Tec is a patented interior surface for swimming pools utilizing finely screened natural river rock worn smooth by years of nature's tumbling. The rock is geologically tested for hardness, angularity, content, and size.

What is the history of Pebble Tec?
Pebble Tec was developed in Australia more than two decades ago. Over 50,000 pools have been installed in Australia and the United States. This means you are considering a time proven, quality product that has gained strong customer acceptance worldwide.

How are the pebbles placed on the surface?
Predetermined ratios of Pebble Tec stone and cement are combined with water and additives, then pneumatically applied with a standard pool plaster pump to a thickness of approximately 1/2". Once the Pebble Tec is applied, it is hand troweled utilizing a special process by trained applicators. At a precise time the material is "exposed" by a method which uncovers the top layer of pebbles. When the finish is thoroughly hardened, the pool is then cleaned with a solution to enhance the brightness and luster of the natural stone.

Is the surface rough?
The surface can be described as "orange peel" smooth with indentions. The stones used in Pebble Tec are finely screened and naturally tumbled resulting in a bumpy non-abrasive surface. The pebble surface is also comfortable for walking in the shallow end.

What if algae grows on the Pebble Tec finish?
Algae can be a problem on any pool surface if pool maintenance has been lacking. However, algae does not bond as readily to Pebble Tec as it does to conventional pool plaster due to the tumbled stone surface. Pebble Tec can also be cleaned more easily than plaster.

Does the Pebble Tec pool vary in color?
A pool done in this finish is intended to duplicate the natural appearance of a lake or stream bed and therefore color variation is a desired result. Water has a tendency to reflect hues and tones depending on sunlight intensity and angle that can vary depending on the time of day.

Will the pebbles fall off?
It is normal to experience a small loss of pebbles for a short period of time after Pebble Tec installation. You may find a handful in your strainer basket after you vacuum for the first few weeks but don't worry...your pool is covered with in excess of 30 million pebbles.

What is the warranty on Pebble Tec?
Splash Pools offers a written 15 year unconditional warranty on all Pebble Tec Installations. That's a piece of mind investment. Please consult with your installer as to their warranty terms and conditions.

Is your concrete swimming pool starting to show it's age? Does your once stunning backyard oasis no longer receive compliments from your friends and family? Then it's probably time for a swimming pool renovation.

Let's break down the most common items addressed during a swimming pool renovation:

1. Interior Surface: The interior surface of your concrete swimming pool is either coated with plaster / marcite or paint. Plaster and Marcite are interchangeable terms for the same product. If the surface is rough, discolored, pitted, chipping, delaminating or just outdated it's time to replace it. The process involves removing the existing surface by manually chipping it off down to the concrete or if it's still structurally sound they can just cut out around all the fittings and tiles. Next the surface is acid washed to make the surface as rough as possible for the new surface to adhere to. Finally the new surface is installed. Your choices are practically endless and include: White Plaster, Colored Plaster, Quartz Aggregate, Pebble Tec, Beadecrete or an all tile pool. Basically the White and colored plaster are the most economical but carry the shortest warranty (usually 1 year) and are the most affected by poor water chemistry. Quartz aggregate finishes are more durable and fall in the mid-range price matrix and usually carry a 1-5 year warranty depending on the product. Pebble Tec,Beadcrete and all pebble finishes are by far the most durable most carrying a 5 - 15 warranty but are typically twice as expensive as a standard white plaster. If you are looking for the Rolls Royce of pool finishes then you are in the market for an all glass tile swimming pool. These are highly custom finishes and start around $50,000 for the finish alone and we have installed some in excess of $300,000. You must be able to appreciate your pool as a piece of artwork and no longer a utilitarian object.

2. Tile and Coping: This is the portion of the pool along the edge and where the waterline meets the wall. Tile and coping is generally replaced every 8-10 years due either to maintenance requirements oraesthetic purposes. The days of "pool blue" water line tile and brick coping are gone. Pool owners are now looking for a more dynamic look with mosaic and glass tile waterlines with natural stone coping. Generally pool owners complete the tile and coping at the same time as the pool resurfacing. This minimizes redundant costs associated with both items.

3. Deck and Patio: After time your deck or patio will start to show the signs of age. Due to freeze / thaw conditions your deck can start to heave, crack, discolor and spall. Or maybe you just have additional space needs. The easiest and least expensive way is to have an overlay system applied to the existing concrete. This could involve an acid stain, Kool Deck, acrylic deck stain, etc. These topical coatings can refresh the look of you pool but will not fix structural issues or cracks. Realistically, it doesn't cost that much to have your existing deck removed and a new one installed. Once the deck is removed you can choose any material you want. Plain Concrete, Colored Concrete, Stamped Concrete, Pavers and Natural Stone are a few of the options to choose from.

4. Equipment Upgrades: If your equipment is more than 5 years old than most of the components are outdated and energy hogs. I recommend that EVERYONE replace their current pump with a Variable Frequency Drive Pump. We recommend the Pentair Intelliflow Pump. This pump will save you about 60% on energy consumption and they run about 80% quieter than a standard pump. Heaters are another energy hog that have had large efficiency upgrades in the past 5 years.

5. Outdoor Kitchens & Fireplaces: These are the two items that we are installing with almost almost every renovation we complete. Complete outdoor living is the goal of most of our clients. By installing an outdoor kitchen and fireplace you have extended your outdoor living season by at least four months. There's nothing better than cooking out and then sitting around a fire in your backyard with friends when the temperature starts to fall to the Lower 50's at night.

6. Landscaping: Most new pool owners spend their entire budget on the pool and hardscaping but generally neglect the landscaping portion of the project. Get a professional landscape plan and stick to it. Don't let the landscaper fool you...a one gallon plant will not grow 5 feet in one year. Spend a little more up front and get larger plants so you won't have to spend 5 years nurturing your landscape to get the look you were hoping for.

Custom Infinity Edge Swimming Pools

Many people think they can only have an infinity edge swimming pool if they live on the side of a mountain or have an ocean front view...not the case at all. Sure these are great places that the infinity edge works well but that is just the beginning. Many times we incorporate the infinity edge design on completely level or uphill slope conditions. Infinity edge designs are truly dynamic for the fact that they draw you eye toward and over the edge swimming pool. For this reason we may design a level lot infinity pool and place a piece of art, sculpture or specimen tree at the end of the edge. Allowing the reflection of this primary focal point to create a secondary focal point on the surface of the water. Or maybe, the infinity edge falls back toward the house or sitting area. This will give you a great waterfall effect as well as the infinity illusion while swimming in the pool. Other designs feature two, three or all four sided infinity edge pools...your imagination is the limit when it comes to design possibilities so don't think a infinity edge design won't work on your project. Leave that decision up to the design professional and you will be surprised at what will fit within the architecture of your site.
